Affortunato Gory was born in Florence. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence under Augusto Rivalta. In the beginning of the 20th century he moved to Paris and completed his education under Victorien-Antoine Basset. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1902, 1904, 1912, 1914 and 1923.

His oeuvre consists of sculptures of young women, children and some historical figures like Rembrandt en Dante. He worked in marble, bronze, ivory, often combining these materials in so-called chryselephantine figures.

This sculpture depicts a dancer in Oriental dress. She is elegant and self-aware. Typical for Gory is the expression of pace in the sculpture. This is manifested in the waving dress and the gesture of the young woman.
