Léonard was without a doubt inspired by the Javanese dancers he saw at the World Exhibition of 1889. He has wonderfully captured the Indonesian charm. The subtle gesture of the hand with the bowed fingers. The concentrated yet mysterious smile on her face and the beautifully worked robe show he carefully studied the dancers.
