Aristide Maillol
((Banyuls-sur-Mer 1861-1944)

“La Pudique”, 1900

(Woman covering her breast)
Pink patinated terracotta
Life time unique, press moulded by the artist, signed with the monogram ‘M’ with the ‘a’ inserted
H. 16,4cm, l.22,1 cm, d.7,4 cm

This early work shows that Maillol’s already developed his personal style: simplification of forms, density of volumes, reference to Antiquity and the feel of monumentality, a few years later resulting in ‘La Mediterranée’, exhibited at the Salon in 1905. With this work the artist breaks with everything he learned at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and with the realistic sculpture of the late 19th century.

Dina Vierny has confirmed the authenticity and the édition of this work (this terracotta and six examples in bronze, the 2/6 at the Musée Maillol)
