This corner cupboard is a fine example of the influence of French furniture in The Netherlands. Circa 1760 Dutch cabinet makers started to work in the French taste. They decorated their best pieces of furniture with floral marquetry and geometric patterns. In many cases the shape of the piece too followed the French example. In this case however the shape is typical Dutch and only the inlay work is ‘French’.
Corner cabinets are rare in this small group of Dutch furniture in the French taste. Most of which pieces are commodes or secretares. There is one other corner cupboard known that is strongly related to this piece both in shape as in decoration which is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
