Portrait of a man in Oriental costume was painted when Kruseman worked in the workshop of Jacques Louis David. At that same time David was working on his last important and world-famous painting “Mars disarmed by Venus and three Graces”. Kruseman has used the same model for his portrait as David use for his Mars. The model has exceptionally nice and classic features. His soft eyes, beautiful eyebrows, classical nose and well proportioned mouth make him an ideal model in the international taste of that time.
